Thoughs: Salò

Today I fucked my hands up real bad and had to kill some time waiting for my sleepy pills to kick in without making it miles worse by refusing to stop using said hands, so I watched the movie Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1976). (For a summary/primer, look here.). I tried to watch it with a friend, but he had to bow out early because it's a fucking brutally heavy movie and he wasn't prepared for that, even in spite of having been warned a few times and having some plans in place for what he was gonna do if the movie was more intense than he wanted. So I agreed to write my thoughts down somewhere else so I can give him the spoiler-free version (because much of my thoughts are on the philosophical points I was pulling out of the movie) and let him make his own conclusions. For reasons I think should be obvious, I'm not about to go talk about Salò of all things on tumblr lmfao

General warnings: Salò is a very bleak movie about a bunch of fascists raping, torturing, and murdering teenagers for their own amusement. Don't pass this point if you don't want to hear about (bot limited to) fascism, rape, cruelty in general, entitlement and weird ideas about bodies, general debasement, and shit and coprophilia. Some current events, probably, too, because it kept striking me as relevant for the modern day. Also, there will be spoilers.

( My thoughts on Salò )

comments

i'm trying to test my new printer by writng a letter in my conlang to print out, because i only have lined paper that won't kill this printer and i want to test the way script looks in it, and... well...

mostly i'm here to list off words with particularly pleasant mouthfeel i've made up over the last few days

orthography information:

<table cellspacing="0"
I got a printer today!

Someone at one of the colleges on the campus I go to was throwing it out and I asked if I could take it. They said yes. It's mine now. I printed a test drawing off and it's not the *best* printer but like, hey, "it works" is good by me.

It also smokes the entire time it's printing, which i think is a "bad sign" but is also pretty cool so i'm kind of into it. no complaints

comments

(woefully) PROJECTS!

Because i needed another thing on my plate...

I'm fed up with the epub readers I have available for my shitty chromebook because it has to be browser-based (chromeOS on this thing is out of date by multiple years), cannot be an extension (because chrome on this OS is also wildly out of date) and, most crucially, needs to not be paginated (because I need to minimize the amount of clicking I do daily; my hands are recovering but not there yet).

Truth be told I keep going "damn, I wish this was formatted like AO3", because reading fanfiction is easier than reading real books at least in part because the format actually works for me miles better! i hate pagination in ebooks; it's like the worst part of reading physical books made even more inconvenient by the fact that it's an intangible page that i still have to deal with pagination on, and the scrolling ereaders I can use on my shitty chromebook suck so bad.

I'm tired of manually opening up the inspection tab and free-rewriting the CSS every time I want to read a book while I pretend to pay attention to a class. It's very annoying to have to do.

All this comes together in:

I want to make either a browser-based or just generally executable-in-browser epub reader of my own. And I want to steal AO3's interface. because it's a good interface and it does exactly what i want, which is make separation by chapter and refuse any separation by page, and it has line breaks at a height that works for me and I can change the css if i want to because it lets you load in your own css files.

I don't know dick about epubs!!!!!!!! All i know is that if you rename them to be a .zip you can extract everything inside them but that's it! that's all i got! I am not a software engineer! I am not even a half-passable coder; all I know is fucking HTML and some very stumbling CSS from writing userstyles by going f12 and copying values out and then changing them to be dark instead of light! I am not up to task on this.

And yet.

So stay tuned because I'll probably start crying about code shortly, I suppose lol.

comments

In the last couple weeks I read the Machineries of Empire series... more times than is reasonable, frankly... and i have come to the conclusion that having a character who, if placed in an enclosure with themself, would decide to resort to violence almost immediately, is fucking awesome. and now i need to do this.

relatedly, i think more of us should be writing fics with the explicit plot of Revenant Gun as our frameworks. Because it works and it works damn well. I'm thinking about doing it to Megatron as we speak.

comments

all crossposted from my art tumblr which i keep updated more because uhhh... uploading photos is easier there. maybe i could set up a feed to automatically post any images i put there over here...

Last time I did this was like last June, so it's been a few months. I don't feel like updating the old post any more.

This post last updated 9/22!

( Character context (cribbed from last post, mostly) )

( High-effort (a handful) )

( Low-effort (many) )

comments

essays i want to write eventually, once i'm confident no one else has gotten there before me and that it's not something the average Tumblr PosterTM seems to have wrapped their head around (low bars)

- Jedao and Charisma, contrasting Revenant Jedao, Cheris Jedao, and Moth Jedao, their respective circumstances and power structures around and underneath them, and how being formally low-power and functionally disposable means you have to get good at wielding soft power (like, say, making people like you so they don't want you to get yourself killed)

- Cheris (original) as a collaborator and assimilation in the Hexarchate (what it says on the tin)

- Moth Jedao vs OG Jedao and how well Yoon Ha Lee wrote a younger version of the same guy by making him worse at things he was originally good at believably

- the textual case for Nirai Kujen only fucking people he's got absolute power over and why I think it's compelling and plausible (which is basiccally just me citing the text extensively for three paragraphs and making no particular analyses)

probably some others

comments

it's been a while since i was on here.

uh, in terms of news about my life, uh... well, i went back to college. which i didn't really stop being at. fall semester started a couple weeks ago. it's fine.

I read a number of books in the last few weeks -
first all of Infinite Dendrogram, which rules
then Luminous Dead, which was okay i guess
then Poppy War, which rules
then Heaven Official's Blessing, which rules
and finally Machinery of Empire, whcih may have filled my Reading Things Quota for the next howeverlong because instaed of reading new things i want to go back and reread Ninefox Gambit about twelve more times.

I haven't written anything publishable. I've made some art. My brain is not where I want it to be but i'm, you know, focusing on finishing the year out without failing, so we're not gonig to pretend anyone thought i was going to walk out of this year of like as high intensity Classes as i can physically manage with a really impressive creative output in my hands lol

anyway here's to me not forgetting dreamwidth exists. again. i'm really only here because the author of machineries of empire has a dw account and it reminded me that i also have one fo those

comments

woes...

College is running me ragged. Not because it should be, really, because of the three classes I'm taking in two of them the workload is completely reasonable. It's just that the third, which should objectively be my easiest class, is run by a professor who is completely out of her fucking mind and expects full assignments at unreasonable paces. I'm talking one assignment due at noon and another at midnight on the same day when the second relies on getting feedback from the first so you're obligated to babysit the college website that entire afternoon, and fuck you if you have anything else to do with yourself. Late work, obviously, not accepted, because this professor understands what having a life outside of school and "a summer vacation" is for.

Needless to say, I'm kind of mad, because this has (among other things) meant I couldn't tacklye my other classes at nearly the pace I'd have liked to. One of them I haven't even begun doing the actual work because I haven't had time and it's all due at the end of the month.

So, you know, two weeks from now.

:)

I've mostly finished everything else there is to write for that one stupid fucking class so I'm going to tackle the class I'm talking about now, but words cannot express how fucking irked I am. I've complained to the school and left her a couple bad reviews in a couple places I know it'll matter, but like, that doesn't change the class itself.

comments

Community college really underprepared me for what shortened-semester summer classes would be like at [college redacted] huh.

i have a class where i have a full essay or creative work due every single day for six weeks straight. i finished two separate community college class workloads in less than a week. huh.

im still working on that but so far i've done.... two weeks.... of six.... for the one that has the most ridiculous stringent requirements.

i need to get a move on on this, i will not be happy if i can't take commissions until july.

comments

Updates coming as necessary, I suppose.

1. ( Exercise in rewriting poetry without a rhyme into a rhyming format (will never be revised) )

2. ( My mimicry of a different poem about 'where the author was from' )

3. ( ekphrastic poem designed to describe a piece of artwork )

4. ( single-line poem with a title that recontextualizes it somewhat )

5. ( attempt at skaldic courtly meter )

comments

Lux - Eli - Jai - story idea

Note: this is mostly here for my own purposes - it's easier for me to find things on Dreamwdith than it is many other places, lol. But also because I like attention and I want attention. So there is that.

A handful of events have conspired to make me brush off some very old ocs:

1. I remembered Kit and Kat (first invented circa 2006 when I got two cat-shaped beanie babies) exist and that I like them in the strange incarnation I first came up with around 2013 where Kat is a stone-faced scary badass murder assassin who is Cold and Heartless because she is just not that emotive and feels awkward when showing emotion so instead she just kind of doesn't, and Kit is like pulling some manic pixie dream girl femme-fatale assassin shit but mostly because she is just a weird freak and people let her get away with licking their blood if she's being sexy about it. I think it is a fun dynamic to throw into anything, where there's a Big Scary Bruiser Girl who is just kind of a little bashful and shy but Can and Will punch you out and she is attached to the weirdest most wired little freak you've ever met with the best tits you have ever seen.

2. A friend was in my house and showed me Trigun (the original anime, from 1997) and it bit me

3. I was drawing Rex and decided that a drawing I had sketched for him to be in looked too demure and cute to be my beloved bitch asshole, so I worked it into being my like... hornyposting transitionsona "Spider" instead, and then was like hm top surgery scars are cool, and because i was a bit intoxicated while doing it I started doing some real high-fantasy top surgery scar patterning that looked like a diamond in the center of the chest where I have some scarring from unrelated issues and then like rings around it. Then I decided it didn't work for Spider, because Spider is a grimy little bug of a person the same way I am, mentally dusted off a different oc, and transplanted it onto him...

4. Elysium (nickname Eli) and Lux are two characters I made up in high school based off a book series I liked and some characters that I felt like didn't get the spotlight the way I wanted, they're a team that consists of one dirtbag 20-something year old Martian gig worker and his cat Lux who is (apparently) made of fire and who Eli found in an abandoned ruin as a preteen.

They never had a story, they only had a concept. At the time I was also really enamored with a specific character dynamic that I don't think suits either of them - the way I wrote Felyx and Rex and the way I wrote Eli and Lux was the same, even though Felyx and Rex are antagonists and not meant to be terribly lovable and Eli and Lux are supposed to be root-for-them underdog types lol.

Lux's core concept was that he was actually the physical manifestation of an accretion disk that was also alive or something, with the idea being that he was like a walking entropy-based apocalypse who had lost his memories and wasn't aware of it himself, and if he remembered tjat he could start like, eating stars and shit, but he doesn't because he is too busy being a cat.

Eli... never really had much of a concept, honestly. Just a physical design and a few vague ideas and a handful of one-off short stories I wrote that were not very good. He is a magician with an unusual set of abilities that he does not use nearly to their full extent, he has mostly a collection of distant friends doing the mid-twenties gtfo-hometown thing so they're just sort of vanishing as the days go by, and he's doing like minimum wage magical nonsense.

5. Ta'jai Elarayn is a completely unrelated guy who I just think is really fucking funny because he sucks so fucking much. He is literally the most immortal character I have - he absolutely cannot die under literally any circumstances. He's been thrown into stars and survived. He's fallen through the vacuum of space and survived. He's like a starfish and he can turn into two guys if you separate parts of him from himself, he can reproduce by budding and clone himself, he is an inside-out shambling mass of tentacles that just sort of looks like a person because the tentacles are all on the inside and he still has the skin he used to have before he was the thing he is, the closest thing he has to blood is both a sedative, aphrodisiac, painkiller and accelerant and on top of that it's bright blue and tastes like honey just because, he can talk to fish, and his greatest desire in life is to bum around going to random events and eating people. He does have some vague obligation toward eating people due to the same sequence of events that made him into the thing he is but he could always choose to just eat fish; the actual curse he's under means he has to have a conversation with his meals... and he can talk to fish. He just likes human-and-alien meat better. Because he kind of sucks.

Jai is this way because of (I was taking really heavy inspiration from Worm for this because I didn't ever need it to be relevant to the context he was ending up in) a character called The Watcher, who is also an embodiment of entropy and apocalypses in a much more straightforward way - it is the Watcher's great hobby to destroy civilizations, laying waste to everyone in them and devouring the remains. But a while ago The Watcher got into it with someone in their weight class and was put under a curse that means that they can do no harm. The spell is a weaselwords spell, like how Haven's powers work, so the exact wording (which I don't remember anyway because I'm doing some 'they're aliens and their words are different' shit here) matters and means that The Watcher can only interfere by doing what is asked of them, and giving people tools to fuck their OWN civilizations up.

On the whole folks are willing to work with that because The Watcher is like a weird fucked up space genie and they can do basically anything. Jai, fool that he was, asked for The Watcher to change his appearance and make him better at talking to people and otherwise make him charismatic and charming and also left quite a lot of awkward "or something"s in there that gave The Watcher a lot more wiggle room to be like. Lol. Lmao. Im going to ruin yr life. In exchange The Watcher sent Jai to kill his immediate family and bring The Watcher their hearts, which Jai did without a fuss and didn't think to regret until well after he received his 'reward' - most of which was some nonsense that The Watcher threw in with the vaguest hints of what Jai asked for, because they could do that and it was funny to them.

Jai subsequently did a really bad job keeping the fact that he was an immortal cannibal secret so he got launched off that planet about two years later and drifted through deep space as a miserably frozen-and-burnt piece of space debris before crashing on a (barely) habitable asteroid, defrosting a bit tardigrade-style, and then having to find a way back to a place where there were other living people so he could stop existing in miserable torment. He would like to take it easy. unfortunately there is also problems in his life such as the fact that he refuses to stop fucking killing and eating people.

6. Haven is a different oc who is like a middle-manager from hell working for the worst organization ever invented. He sucks, his coworkers suck, his boss sucks, his organization sucks, and everyone involved in the entire thing kind of just needs to die really. Their job is to make things worse for everyone and they work very hard at it. Haven and several other members of this organization, including his boss who is a much bigger fish than he is, have the ability to mind-control people into doing what they want - in much the same way that The Watcher's curse works.

I'm not convinced that Haven belongs on Elysium's Mars. I want him to exit the organization before then. But it'd certainly help keep things on the rails if Haven is managing someone who's managing someone who's managing Jai...

Anyway Trigun reminded me that MOTW stories actually fucking rule (I'm a big fan of the format!) and Elysium could absolutely just be a weird wanderer going from town to town on gig ghost work. I gave Elysium top surgery scars and realized that having one character who knows their past just fine but refuses to discuss it and having another character who absolutely doesn't is kind of a fun dynamic so Eli as a deep-stealth binary tboy who got all his surgeries done at 16 and then skipped town and is like a mysterious loner wanderer suits him better than it did before, i think. it's also more narratively interesting.

Beyond that... the big trouble I've always had with Eli and Lux is that they have nothing going on. They're not doing anything. But I forgot that sometimes a story can just be a guy going a bunch of places. Also Trigun's Meryl and Millie are the greatest characters of all time and I love them to pieces.

comments

Music Notes 4/25 - 5/8

I missed another week, yes, yes, whatever. I was too busy to listen to a lot of new stuff and in too bad a mood when I wasn't anyway.

Favorite song of the week is DEJA VU by dave rogers. I believe this is one of the greatest songs ever made.

( The Music )

Danceability: 9/10
Catchiness: 9/10
Fun To Listen To: 10/ 10
Musical Interest: 6/10
Recommendability: 10/10

2. Midlife Crisis by Faith No More - was chatting with someone I'm becoming friends with over on Discord and they mentioned Faith No More. I knew Epic and was fond of it in, like, middle school? so I put some of their music on.
Unfortunately they got misogyny in this one. It's got a fun hook and it's catchy but come on.

Genre: Rock
Rating: 33/50

Danceability: 6/10
Catchiness: 8/10
Fun To Listen To: 8/10
Musical Interest: 7/10
Recommendability: 4/10

3. We Care A Lot by Faith No More - The other Faith No More song I picked up. I also like this one. I also keep being increasingly irritated by the lyrics. Oh well.

Genre: Rock
Rating: 31/50

Danceability: 8/10
Catchiness: 8/10
Fun To Listen To: 6/10
Musical Interest: 4/10
Recommendability: 5/10

4. No Way Out by Within Destruction - Got my ass to a local grocery store to buy tea for Final Week Preparations and the cashier was wearing a Within Destruction shirt, and when I said it was cool he told me about them. I put them on while I walked to the next stop on my trip. Excellent song to shop for colanders from the thrift store to, in my opinion.

Genre: Metalcore / Deathcore[What is deathcore?]
Rating: 33/50

Danceability: 6/10
Catchiness: 7/10
Fun To Listen To: 7/10
Musical Interest: 9/10
Recommendability: 4/10

5. Exofilth 2.0 by Within Destruction and Distant - I like this one better than No Way Out. Ultimately straight-up metalcore kind of bores me these days, I spent too much of my youth listening to it and I'm on to more musically complex pastures these days. That being said, I like Exofilth 2.0, it sounds cool. I do always like when there's a nice melodic guitar build, and I like the weird sounds in the background of this one along with the synths. Makes me want to listen to Reliqa's new stuff again today, if I'm honest.

Genre: Metalcore / Deathcore
Rating: 31/50

Danceability: 5/10
Catchiness: 6/10
Fun To Listen To: 7/10
Musical Interest: 9/10
Recommendability: 4/10

6. Alone Not Lonely by Evans Blue - another old one on my playlist Because. I like this song primarily because I really liked it when I was fifteen but it's still alright to listen to in and of itself, unlike some other Evans Blue songs I can name.

Genre: Rock
Rating: 36/50

Danceability: 9/10
Catchiness: 7/10
Fun To Listen To: 9/10
Musical Interest: 5/10
Recommendability: 6/10

7. Perfect Night by Tsuneo Imahori - This is Legato's theme in the original Trigun anime. I am ENAMORED with the strange transmission-y sound of it paired with the howling of the wind. This is a like a radio whimpering in pain as someone slowly crushes it.

Genre: I am calling this noise - a google search didn't help much because it's getting categorized as "soundtrack" but it bears resemblance to electronic noise I've heard
Rating: 18/50

Danceability: 3/10
Catchiness: 1/10
Fun To Listen To: 3/10
Musical Interest: 10/10
Recommendability: 1/10

( Stats )

no last week retrospective I am too busy being soooo eepy and not remembering anything

comments

1. Didn't die! Semester is over, now I wait for everything to be graded. I walk in the graduation ceremonies in like, two days from now. Wild. My dad is coming up to [city name removed] in the next couple days and then it'll be a thing I guess.

2. For the past week I have had the excellent fortune of having a friend in my house. This helped immensely with the "not dying" part of the whole finals week situation. Watched some Trigun, saw other friends, had an excellent time... i am very happy to have my bed back to myself now though, I won't lie. What suffering, that all my friends do not live within walking distance! What bullshit! Lamentations and woe, for I will surely not lay eyes upon them in the flesh again for like at minimum another six months.

3. spent all my money on my friend like a dumbass but that's okay because i'm honestly kind of raring to go at picking up commissions. Good news if you want a commission, I suppose. I'll probably get in touch with my FandomTrumpsHate people over this weekend and wrap up my Arcee illustration and then ill be cleared of Creative Obligations so i can start picking up new ones.

4. Inventing stories again. Send help. I'll make a post on this later.

5. I started writing a timeline for Rex's backstory to finally just have some dates on things and it rapidly got. Big. I'll probably be turning it into a post so I can see it while i'm on my horrid little chromebook. incidentally, if anyone knows of any free timeline-making tools/platforms/etc that allow for (minimum) 50-60 separate events please let me know, i need me one of those if i wish to make this easier to use.
Also started revamping my radasyx working dictionary into a more modern & more effective one that incorporates more of the new elements i forgot to update the old one with. Still doing it in google sheets, though.

6. God I want to draw SO BAD. I don't currently have the focus to finish any pieces but that doesn't mean i haven't started a shit ton.

7. Got too stoned last night and now I'm waiting for sobriety. I'm having a nice night though.

comments

Music Notes 4/17 - 4-24

Well, I forgot to do this on Tuesday, but in great news I actually didn't listen to anything new until about midnight Tuesday night, so it's best that I put it off, actually. School's been killing me and ive been coping by procrastinating hard and drawing like a madman (I've been linking most of it in this post here & updating it periodically - also best read from my journal page tbh because it's got an excessive amount of cuts to keep you from having to see 80000000 miles of text per image)

Anywho. This is gonna have to be done at like 2am on Thursday night because School is For Real Fucking Killing Me and i got shit to do. We're pretending it's still 4/24. You will roll with this because you love me and you will do everything i say obviously. I'm writing this up in lieu of doing my work because I'm going to explode and blow up and die though. You understand.

I'll be replacing the "Aux/Can I Show This To My Dad" metric with a subjective "Can I Recommend This To People?" metric instead, which serves a similar purpose with the caveat that it will not arbitrarily discount certain genres. That said, I do not like "recommendable" as a metric, because recommendations need to be tailored to the person they're going to! But I'm not really sure what to swap it out for. "good to move to", "good to sing along to", "good to listen to", and "good to analyze" are basically the only things that matter to me when I listen to music, after all.

Maybe I should bring it down to only the four metrics, but I don't like the number 4 and I don't like the number 40, so, eh, we're going to have to figure it out some other day I have not got the time for this.

Favorite of the week: Die By The Blade by Beast In Black. It's one of those weeks. I would like to die by the blade. Who up to be the one I love to hate with all my heart 👀 lol

( The Music! )

( Statistics )

( Last Week Retrospective )

comments

OC Image Dump (February-April)

I been drawing my horrible guys. :3 Updating periodically until the end of April.
First update: 4/17
Second update: 4/23

Note: not including some pieces I've posted but that I don't like. If you want to see those, idk, go look at my Tumblr blog, it should be visible to the public.

( Character context )

( High-Effort (two pictures) )

( Lower-effort (many) )

comments

Music Notes 4/11 - 4-17

Truncated because I forgot to do them last week and cut into my own time lol. I have also been under the weather (headache season) so most of the things I typically enjoy (screaming, super loud drums, aggressively-difficult to listen to synthetic noises, etc) and I wanted to listen to relatively more familiar music, so there's a lot more nostalgia value on song listing here. Didn't finish this one again yesterday either.

Favorite of this week: Not a super strong favorite; I'm not like, obsessed with basically any of the songs I listened to this week. Pack of Wolves (Pendulum Remix) by Night Breed and Pendulum

Still using the genre/catchy/fun/interest/aux rating system; I figure at the end of next week I'll revisit it and see what I want to change. That said, I think aux rating is arbitrarily skewing the results, and I know I want to replace that with a different category already. Still taking suggestions, if anyone is reading these and has any lol.

( This Week )

( Last Week Retrospective )

comments
