Rex meta!
honestly Rex’s life makes so much more sense now.
info under the cut because, uh, tw basically any bad thing i could have come up with happening happened to him at some point; he’s a severely traumatized lizard man and i couldnt figure out why for the longest time but here we are
SO! Rex’s life is basically a study in ‘how far does someone need to snap before they go off the rails in a functionally interesting manner’ and also a study in ‘why the fuck hasnt this worked yet’.
Rex is shockingly resilient. He’s been brainwashed, tortured, abused, had his family killed in front of him when he was a kid, been forced to sell his organs, his whole life has just, sucked, and yet he’s. surprisingly functional. somehow. and all of these weird ghost people from another dimension keep fucking with his life for no concievable reason… until i stop looking at it from the perspective of Me and start looking at it from the perspective of The Game Advisors.
because Rex isn’t the oldest surviving Ket’Aothea. That goes to his siblings Silas and Adder…
but Silas and Adder are both shaidbloods, and therefore player characters.
Rex isn’t.
Rex is, at least to them, an NPC.
And therefore Rex is also the long-lost heir to a lost Dragon country that fell years ago, one of already near-mythical status. And they want their checkpoint city back, because why not.
but the thing is
they want Rex to make it
so that they have an in-game lore built on it.
Now, the problem is that Rex doesn’t… care. Rex doesn’t actually want that. He just doesn't care about Hollyleaf rising anew with him as its young ruler. And by that point, the shaidbloods and the GA’s had already put work into him– they made him see the reason that Humans Are The Worst, they gave him inspiration– they even helped him change his name from Kierel to Rex, for reasons of King Rex is just on the nose enough for the GA’s to be way way WAY here for it– and then he threw it away by not actually wanting to raise a new country.
so they sighed.
and then they went, but what if he’s a bad guy? Give him a company and make him one of the Big Bads so we can defeat him. He Has Lore. It’s too good to let die.
So they gave him over to a shaidblood named Eli, who had to get his trust somehow after they managed to deeply burn Rex’s trust of, anyone, for a while– and Eli fucked up. And then Eli went, well, fuck the GA’s, I do what I want and I could see a way to monetize it. (a note: I am not getting into what that entails because i do not want to put that where people will see it, just please note, many triggers, it was terrible, eli is a piece of shit, his death is well deserved and ive written at least four different aus where rex got to fucking cut his head off and mount it on a spike, anyways, moving on.) So that happened.
and then they went “well FUCK eli what the FUCK did you do,” and Eli kinda, shrugged, and the in-game mod for the region, Deillen, AKA Lord Deiya, forced him to let Rex go for reasons of “DUDE THATS NOT COOL WE NEED THAT GUY”.
but see Deillen’s in game persona (lord Deiya) was, uh, among other things, in charge of Eli’s dragon trafficking business, and while Rex may not be stupid he is a fucking martyr, so he went and found Deiya. and was like. you don't have to pay me. just give me Eli. i'll do whatever the fuck you want.
and then Deiya was like…. hm. ok. deal.
didn’t give him Eli
and then basically proceeded to have everyone treat him like shit for the next about. four years of his life. Then Deiya decided it was time to move on, and make him a rogue sort of enemy of the organization, and they told Rex that they were going to kill Rex’s whole family.
and then my moron boy goes “NO! No stop stop I’ll do anything just do whatever the hell you want to me don’t hurt them!” and then Deiya is like. no. why would i do that? and Rex… honestly Rex talks himself into getting locked in a cell and tortured on a daily basis.
actually locked is a strong word.
they leave the door open every day for two straight years.
he doesn’t take it.
because of course. he’s doing it for his family. as long as he gives Deiya what Deiya wants, he’s fine. this is fine. this is perfectly fine.
eventually Deiya like, finds out he didn’t leave? and by this point they’ve pretty much given up on him.
so they get rid of him, send him back to his family, and then start to focus on his younger brother–
and Rex kills the first guy who shows up to nudge Taz towards Doing Cool Things.
And the second.
And the third.
Then they kinda give up. Rex is a force to be reckoned with. Just not in a direction they wanted.
GOD THIS MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE THAN JUST ‘BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO THIS ONE GUY FOR NO REASON BUT NO ONE ELSE”
