I will admit i first had to run to two separate friends and just SHRIEK in their DMs about how much I wanted to dropkick the author of that addition. I was seeing red for a good minute there.

but, of course, all you can do on the internet is absolutely eviscerate their argument and then block them before they can try and reply so they're forced to stew in their own juices while knowing they were showed up, so then I did that instead.

And... yeah I like??? I argued with half their position but everything they said was wrong and like. so genuinely insulting not only to me but to the legacy of fucking. every queer person on this earth who was ever targeted by that shit that I just. I. [angry noises]

Ages ago I made a post like "people who claim to be anarchists and prison abolitionists and talk about restorative justice but want to kill people who do fanfiction in ways they find morally incorrect are hypocrites" and this post started getting passed around, and i keep an eye on the additions because of course i do. One such addition (which is on nearly every version of the post going around) is like "also it's weird that immorality in fiction is supposedly super capable of erasing your morals but saying graphic threats to people irl is fine"

Someone today took issue with that statement, and made a whole post about how fiction "influences" reality. I said, sort of, but fiction can either reinforce or undermine biases that already exist, and I gave some examples, and this person claimed that some biases were created by fiction.

I said "give me some sources" and they said (verbatim) "The sheer fact that we have these cliches and prejudice embedded in our collective consciousness should be sufficient enough a prove."

Someone ELSE got on from that and was like "I have an example of a stereotype fully made up by fiction! The predatory trans woman trope and the predatory queer trope in general!"

and this was me being PISSED THE FUCK OFF about that because HOLY FAILURE OF SOCIETAL ANALYSIS, BATMAN. with a side of like cleaning-up-history and what i can literally only see as homophobia and transphobia to boot.

ETA: this is a very niche sort of two-communities-colliding kind of issue in the first place. If you had not guessed, i am in fact a leftie, although of like kind of general [waves hands] sort of means and i'm not saying i'm like an out and out anarchist OR anti-anarchism. I do actually care quite a bit about prison abolition and restorative justice. I also care about people not harassing other people over weird fiction LOL. Somehow at this intersection you get people who are nominally anti-prison and anti-punitive justice but also actively and loudly pro-harassment over sexually explicit fanfiction that they think is morally suspect (ranging from "these characters are underage/this is a depiction of abuse" to "these characters are happy and together and overage but i think that you shouldn't ship them and i am going to pull a reason why it's a sex crime out of a hat to smear the author with"). That's the like, context of the original post.
