This year I wrote and posted:
133 fics over 15 fandoms.
Total wordcount: 206854 words

Overall Thoughts:

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
AHAHAHAHAAAAA so much more fic than i expected. By like. several miles. i wrote 100+ fics this year and while some were very short it still adds up to 200k+ words too. I have a spreadsheet; this has been my most productive (ficwise) year ever. The wordcount trend is 'normal' but the fic number count isn't, and i spent a lot more time writing this year than I did in earlier ones. Like- in 2020-2021 i was not in college. In 2021-2022 I was. I expected to write less fic. Instead.... idk. Number Go Up took hold of me lmfao. I got my most substantial writing done either in May (finishing a series for the lolz) or August (became incredibly competitive over someone else's fic number count and decided i had to do that too), so it was a lot of thinking about numbers rather than thinking about fic. The slight uptick in november is also that- that's when i realized i was nearly at 200000 words for the year and that the fic i planned to post to hit that wasn't going to be done by the end of 2022.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Probably TF:P Wheeljack/Vortex, but honestly I didn't do much by way of shipfic this year compared to everything else- a lot of established relationship or obvious pairings. Maybe Redshift/Astrotrain because I didn't expect to write them kissing or holding hands or w/e but that's more because I didn't expect to resurrect Redshift this year or for anyone to like him lmao.

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:

Thinking really hard about worldbuilding, I think. And like the power of friendship. And the power of thinking about ideology weird. Actually, no, that's what it is, it's about people weirding ideology and ideology weirding people.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
wailing and sobbing, how am i supposed to be expected to PICK lmao. This year I wrote a metric fuckton of really self-indulgent fics. i guess at the MOMENT gambling and lighting fires and killing people and fuel purity... but that's just because it's the funniest thing i wrote recently and ive been rereading it because it's there. I think in terms of highest reread value go on, Doctor, smile or Chomp.; Chomp. was really good and gave me like ten new headcanons actually lets go with that one.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
oh hell yeah. I learned that people really like it when you emulate the essay-writing style and write fake essays in character. It's great. I also learned that I like making zines, but not that much.

My best story of this year:
vague gesture. I didn't write "good stories" this year, I wrote fun stories. Maybe By Will of Primus.

My most popular story of this year:
Transmissions from Cybertron, no question.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I actually don't feel like any of my stuff got shafted this year. Like. Genuinely cannot think of anything for this one.

My least favorite story this year:
because it still landed in here, there is someone in the archive (not the one you're thinking); fucking hate that story. it was like i was possessed and i couldnt not write it and five thousand words in i couldnt bring myself not to post it for the spicy wordcount or whatever, but i just kind of hate that i wrote and posted a hatefic. i dont want anyone to read it and i dont like that it's there. but whatever, i already posted it, it'll live there now. if i cared enough to take it down i already would've.

Most fun story to write:
If the Stunticons are in the story then it was that one. These motherfuckers were so fun to write that I literally can't pick one because at all turns I literally just have a fucking blast writing them. They are so easy. You don't have to shake them down for plot, they are each individually plot generators that bump into each other and drop spare plot on the floor for you to pick up and I also love tormenting them a lot. So, like [dramatically gestures at the ao3] one of like 50 minimum, i can't pick

Story with the sweetest moment:
probably in from the cold. idk. I really don't do a lot of sweet. Maybe stop going off into danger??

Story with the single sexiest moment:
wailing sobbing gnashing my teeth etc because the really sexy one that im working on isnt DONE because its so sexy i literally cant finish it, i have to take cold showers in between every six sentences. so i cant point at that one. of what's finished.... probably the power-switch in go on, Doctor, smile. Nothing like a sudden shift in power dynamics to get my gears turning haha

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
probably go on, Doctor, smile just for the inclusion of the word 'cunt' lmao. Or Bug Time for the inclusion of dick grubs as kink. But neither are that out of vein for me.
Maybe Dedication for starting with Pharma POV and then changing POV after killing Pharma by application of Tarn in front of his own kid. but that's also really not out of vein for me.
????maybe in from the cold??? for implied underage? I guess that's the one that's most unusual for me. Someone had gotten into an argument with me (fun) and wouldnt shut up about how i obviously "wanted to write about kids fucking dogs" (??) so i wrote "a kid" fucking "a dog" (neither actual kid nor actual dog were involved). I don't think it counts because it's actually more consensual and less power-dynamically skeevy than almost anything else ive written this entire year though.
I have no idea how to answer this. I set out on purpose to write more fucked up smut and add at least 20 new fics to the rape/noncon warning tag on my list and i did [checks spreadsheet] 14 oh. hm. still

Most overdue:
It's not really overdue but some speedy pilot sharpshooter or something is a result of me telling my friend id write a story about one of their maligned and underappreciated favorites. And then i not only didnt finish it but i also took like three years to do it. Most frustrating part of that is that I literally like that character a lot, I'm just slow to action on these things.
Or perhaps the Vortex/Optimus Prime one I started in LAST DECEMBER. that one's not posted anywhere though.

Most eye roll-worthy title:
take a look at the titles and tell me there are any of them that aren't eyeroll-worthy. i absolutely cannot pick one, there is not a single title that isn't a top contender for THIS spot.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
go ahead and play pin the tail on the stunticon fic. yes it is all of them. im not kidding

Hardest story to write:
none of the ones that were hard to write got posted :,) well, except Runtime. I guess Runtime.

Biggest Disappointment:
Runtime. Didn't feel like it was engaging enough. Timeloops and alternate-retellings-of-the-same are hard for me, as a person who does not have the patience to read the same thing twice in the same breath. Apparently everyone else liked this one a lot but for me I thought it was boring and sucked, so that was disappointing to me.

Biggest Surprise:
Transmissions from Cybertron! It got a ton of attention and feedback even though I like, specially engineered it to get basically none of those things. small cast of d-listers with an oc lead.... and yet. I'm still surprised.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
what do you do in the house of flies? on account of i wrote it while having an Episode and gave Vortex literally the exact same Episode down to some very personal bits that I wasn't thinking too hard about, and then was like sitting there rereading it a couple days later while fidgeting with the bandages on the back of my hand reading the bits where he was like cutting his wrist apart out of boredom like "aha uh hm. i should probably redact this." and then i Didn't. It's fine. The parts people are going to read into aren't the parts that were actually real, and no one was really looking anyway.

Favorite opening line:
Wildrider didn’t think anything of it until Drag Strip hit him in the head and he spat out half of his tongue.
So much is going on in this one already. It's great. It's not even that long.

Favorite closing line:
“Weird,” Jazz said. “I don’t even think this was meant to be an attack. Maybe this was their idea of wishing us a merry Christmas, or something.”
Funny because it's a stupid joke. Hanukah and Christmas ended on the same night this year, so the Autobots think they're doing "this" (blowing up a part of the Ark) for krimmus reasons, while actually this was how the Stunticons intended to celebrate xanike. I love stupid jokes and I love nonsense<3

In conclusion:
Good year. Bountiful harvest. Eat up.

Fic-writing goals for 2023:
Wrap some of the ongoing fics up. Finish Transmissions (which is still fighting me). So on and so forth. May 2023 be the year of "finishing those fics that have been languishing unfinished since 2018" :D
